The "most undervalued" food that a dietician consumes each day to increase her energy
How to increase your intake of prunes
Just make sure the brand you buy doesn't have any extra sweeteners. Prunes are fine on their own. Another choice is prune juice, but I advise limiting daily portions to one cup or fewer.
Here are some of my preferred methods for including prunes in my diet:
1. Add prunes to your smoothie.
If your smoothies need a dose of natural sweetness, consider adding prunes.
I'll combine four pitted prunes, one frozen banana, a half tablespoon of lime zest, a cup of frozen peaches, a cup of frozen pitted cherries, and a half cup of oat milk to make an invigorating morning smoothie.
2. Swap sugar with prune purée in baked goods.
Blend 16 ounces of prunes with 1/2 cup of warm water until a purée forms in the blender. The purée can be used to replace anywhere between one-third and fifty percent of the sugar in a recipe.
Furthermore, prune purée can be used in place of eggs or fat. 1/4 cup of purée can be used in place of one large egg. Purée can be used in place of up to half the butter or oil in a recipe to reduce the quantity of fat.
3. Dip prunes in dark chocolate.
Five pitted prunes can be dipped into melted dark chocolate for a dessert that is high in fibre and antioxidants.
4. Add chopped prunes to chicken salad.
The surprise sweetness that prunes offer to chicken salad is an easy way to liven up the classic poultry meal. Just add chopped pitted prunes to your favourite chicken salad recipe and mix well.
